I’ve been a lukewarm fan of Star Trek for ages, mostly The Next Generation. It had never stood up with Star Wars in my eyes, but lately it’s been getting a lot closer. In spite of dismissing it out of hand when I was a teenager and it was first airing, I’ve been watching Deep Space 9 over the last couple of weeks.
It had seemed weird at first: Star Trek where they rarely go out and do any exploring? What’s the point? It wasn’t until the third season that the crew got a ship that wasn’t just a shuttlecraft, and even then it was shot up in its first encounter and was out of use for several episodes. But with a bit more age on me (so old) I see that what’s being explored is social and political issues, cultural differences, etc. It’s gotten pretty interesting.
