On Writing

Star Trek and Star Wars writers, in general, seem to spend an inordinate amount of time creating new bad guys for the same old good guys, because apparently there isn’t anyone else in the galaxy capable of having an adventure. Meanwhile they ignore the fact that there’s a whole fucking universe of cool shit out there, ready to lead epic storylines if someone only had the balls to put the Enterprise / the Skywalkers away.

Sure, they get away from that sometimes… the Rogue Squadron novels are an excellent example of that… but in most of those they at least seem to try to tie it in to the main group. Star Trek got away from it with a couple of prominent series that didn’t have an Enterprise in it too much, but not without making sure there were plenty of Enterprise movies too.

It’s a shame, really.
