Hot on the heels of the weekend’s explosive finish at Talledega comes a piece of news far, far more grim: the March race at the astoundingly popular Bristol International Speedway did not sell out, ending a streak of 55 races. Shocking to fans and former fans, of course, but it turns out that there’s a hell of a lot more people calling themselves former fans these days.

To hit the high points, TV viewership is down 25%(!) from 2005, proving that it’s not merely a problem of a weak economy. People are sick of this lame crap they’re putting forward, and it’s only going to get lamer. Brian France is pondering all sorts of new and interesting changes to the sport to keep peoples’ interest, like changing the points system and shortening races. After all, it worked last time, right?
